What is a purity ring? A purity ring, chastity ring or promise ring is basically a ring to promote sexual abstinence. By wearing a ring the wearer is stating that they are refraining from having any sexual interaction until they are married. Generally worn on the left ring finger and accompanied by a religious vow to remain celibate and pure until marriage, the ring would be replaced by a marriage band. There is no main design for a purity ring, it can have a gemstone, a diamond, or even words across it.

The Jonas Brothers

One of the most popular bands of 2009 where the Jonas Brothers, the biggest bubblegum pop rock boy band since Hanson. While the Jonas Brothers are known for their music and the affect they have on adolescent girls everywhere they are also known for their Purity rings. All three boys, Kevin Jonas (22), Joe Jonas (20), and Nick Jonas (17) have promised themselves and God to remain virgins until marriage. Joe’s ring is silver and features a cross, Kevin’s is silver with studs, a punk rock purity hybrid from Tiffany’s and Nick had his made at Disney World. Kevin Jonas is now sporting a wedding ring instead of a purity ring due to his recent marriage to Danielle Deleasa.

Jordin Sparks

Jordin Sparks is known for being the American Idol champ and for defending the Jonas Brothers and their purity rings at the MTV Music Awards against host Russell Brand. Who knew that the then 17 year old virgin wore a purity ring! Jordin has worn a platinum promise ring given to her by her parents at 13 and bearing the inscription “True Love Waits”.

“	"My parents gave me a purity ring and talked to me about waiting until I'm married to have sex. It wasn't forced; it just made perfect sense. "It's going to be awesome to say to my husband that I waited my whole life for him."	„

While she acknowledges that waiting is hard, it is a promise to remain a virgin until marriage she made to herself and one she intends to keep.

What really happened at the MTV Music Awards??

September 8 2008 was the annual showcase of MTV and it's music awards show. This year they tapped British comedian Russell Brand to play host. Now lets think here, the host of the show is supposed to be funny, and make everyone laugh. Which is exactly what Russell Brand did. He had critised US President George W. Bush and then he made a comment about the Jonas Brothers and their purity rings. He wasn't being an asshole, he was making a joke, something he was being paid to do. Then little Miss "No Air" Jordin Sparks took offense to the comment because she's still a virgin. She was about to annouce T.I's performance when she opened her mouth and stated

“	"I just have one thing to say about promise rings. It's not bad to wear a promise ring . . .Not everybody -guy or girl- wants to be a slut."	„

This of course forced Mr. Brand to apologize which he didn't do at all

“	"I didn't meant to take it lightly . . . I don't want to piss off teenage fans." Still, Brand, whose apology soon morphed into a series of off-color jokes, said, "Promise rings, I'm well up for it. [But] a bit of sex, it never hurt anybody."	„

Later on Sparks apologized for the wording of her statement, wishing she had chosen another word.

Selena Gomez

Selena Gomez (18) star of the Disney Channel show Wizards of Waverly Place, and former sweetheart to Nick Jonas also sports a purity ring. She says that she one day went to her father and said she wanted a purity ring.

“	“I said, ‘Dad, I want a promise ring.’ He went to the church and got it blessed. He actually used me as an example for other kids. I’m going to keep my promise to myself, to my family and to God.”	„

Papa Gomez then went and got her one and even went the extra step to get it blessed. The ring has "True Love Waits" inscribed on it. Yet another Disney star who is promising not to have sex until marriage.

Julianne Hough

I'm a Virigin! Purity ring proves it.

Julianne Hough (22) of Dancing with the Stars fame, has also made a proclamation of staying a virgin until marriage.

“	"I want to be with that special person. I think to have sex before marriage is an individual decision and waiting will strengthen that relationship."	„

She uses her ring as a way to remind herself to steer clear of the temptations of Hollywood, drinking, smoking, doing drugs, and having sex, she told CosmoGirl. Julianee also counts on her dad to call her out if he thinks she is steering of the good road.

Hilary Duff

Hilary Duff also is another who claims to be a virgin. Despite having already had two high profile romances’ to, Aaron Carter and Joel Madden of Good Charlotte fame, good girl Duff still claims to have remained virtuous. Current beau Mike Comrie will just have to wait as Duff has stated that:

“	“But (virginity) is definitely something I like about myself. It doesn’t mean I haven’t thought about sex, because everyone I know has had it and you want to fit in.” She says, “It’s harder having a boyfriend who’s older because people just assume."	„

Brit-Brit's not a virgin anymore!

Britney Spears burst out on the scene in 1999 and told the world that she was a virgin and would remain one until marriage. This view made her famous the world over for choosing to remain a virgin and spurred a new interest in the pro-chastity education, as they could use Spears as a role model. That is until she came clean a year after her breakup from fellow musician Justin Timberlake stating she had only slept with one man (before her marriage to Kevin Ferderline anyways) and that it had been Timberlake. So much for virginity Brit-Brit.

Jessica Simpson

Jessica Simpson, at the age of 12 was given a purity ring by her father Joe Simpson. Baptist bred Simpson remained a virgin until her marriage to boy bander Nick Lachey. Who knows how many she’s racked up since then. . .
