On August 3, 2008; sources for Christina Applegate released info that the star was diagnosed with breast cancer the following week. Over the weekend, different celeb sites began chattering about if the news was true. Rather than wait the full weekend or end up with a Patrick Swayze type of story being published, Christina's actual representative released the following statement:

Opting for radical treatment

Christina spoke with Good Morning America on August 19, 2008 about the steps she took to cut the cancer off, so to speak. She spoke for the first time about how she had a double mastectomy, which is where both breasts are removed, and how hard a decision it was for her to make. Because of how radical the procedure is, she will be going through reconstructive surgery for another 8 months. She wanted to be rid of the cancer and any chance of it returning but admitted that the cancer scare and surgery really messed with her emotions.

I've laughed so much in the last three weeks. I love living, and I really love my life, and I knew that from this moment on it was only going to be good that was going to be coming. Yeah, I'll face challenges, but you can't get any darker than where I've been. So knowing that in my soul gave me the strength to just say, `I have to get out there and make this a positive.'

Christina's mother also suffered from the disease and Christina herself tested positive for the gene that causes breast cancer to turn into cervical cancer, which made her decision to remove both of her breasts much easier. Despite this, she's got an upbeat attitude on the whole situation and joked about having the best breasts when she's in the nursing home at 90.
