Early life
A strict childhood
Born in Texas as the middle of three daughters of a teacher and a chemical engineer, Jennifer spent much of her childhood in Charleston, West Virginia. Jennifer and her sisters had a very strict home life as children. They were expected to attend church every Sunday, were not allowed to go to movies or wear make-up, and had to wait until they reached the age of 16 before they would be allowed to have their ears pierced.
Early career
Having studied drama at university, Jennifer moved to New York City, where she earned $150 a week as an understudy in a play. A number of minor supporting roles in television movies and series' followed, including Significant Others and Time of Your Life, and a recurring role in the series Felicity. These led to a number of minor movie appearances, including the 2000 comedy Dude, Where's My Car?, playing Ashton Kutcher's girlfriend, followed by a minor appearance as a nurse in the big-budget epic Pearl Harbor, co-starring with her future husband Ben Affleck .
Alias
In 2001, J. J. Abrams, who had produced Felicity, cast Jennifer in the lead role of Sydney Bristow in his new spy drama Alias. The series became an instant success, and led to a number of awards for Jennifer, including "Best Actress in a Television Series - Drama" at the January 2002 Golden Globes. The series ran for five seasons, concluding in May 2006. Jennifer's salary for the show began at $45,000 an episode, rising to $150,000 per episode by the series' end, by which time she had also become one of the show's producers and directed one episode.
Further career
After the success of Alias, Jennifer was able to pick and choose her film roles, and once again starred alongside Ben Affleck as Elektra Natchios in the action movie Daredevil, and reprised her role as Elektra in the 2005 Daredevil spin-off, Elektra. Jennifer also showed her comedic side in the romantic comedies 13 Going on 30, Catch and Release, and Juno, before returning to action movies with the thriller The Kingdom. She also appeared as Roxanne in Cyrano de Bergerac at the Richard Rodgers Theatre on Broadway from November 1, 2007 until January 6, 2008 alongside Kevin Kline in the title role.
Public Appearances
With the success of Alias, Jennifer became a regular guest and presenter at various awards ceremonies and charity events, and has attended every Academy Awards ceremony since 2002, with the exception of 2005. Her first appearance there as a presenter came in 2003, when she presented the awards for Best Short Film and Best Animated Short Film. For her appearance at the 2006 Academy Awards ceremony, where she presented the award for Best Sound Editing, Jennifer wore a flowing halter-style Michael Kors dress and a collection of diamond jewelry worth well over $1,000,000, including a pair of $250,000 earrings for which she had to have her ears pierced especially. During the ceremony, Jennifer stumbled on her flowing dress as she came onto the stage. She did not fall, but lost her balance, and jokingly commented, "I do my own stunts!" In 2008, Jennifer again appeared as a presenter at the Academy Awards. However, this part of the evening was somewhat overshadowed in the next day's press by discussions of the unexpected interruption of her Red Carpet interview by Gary Busey. Busey later publicly apologized for the incident, saying that he merely wanted to congratulate Laura Linney, who was being interviewed along with Garner, and didn't realise that they were being interviewed at the time.
Personal life
Scott Foley
On October 19, 2000, Jennifer married fellow actor Scott Foley, after the two met on the set of Felicity in 1998. Citing irreconcilable differences, they separated in March 2003, Jennifer filed for divorce in May of that year, and they were officially divorced on March 30, 2004
Michael Vartan
Jennifer is known for being very private about her personal life. Over the course of her relationship with her Alias co-star Michael Vartan, she never made any public appearances with him and was late to confirm their relationship in August 2003. Jennifer began dating Vartan in mid-2003, and though rumors of their break-up began in March 2004, Jennifer only confirmed the end of their relationship in August 2004, by which time, she was already dating Ben Affleck.
Ben Affleck
Jennifer's relationship with her Daredevil co-star Ben Affleck was also very low-key. Although it began in July 2004, it was months into their relationship before anyone managed to take a shot of them as a couple, and both stars' publicists denied their relationship until a public appearance at a Boston Red Sox game. Also, when rumours began to circulate that Jennifer could be pregnant, there were repeated denials of the pregnancy. On Jennifer's 33rd birthday, Affleck proposed to her, and the couple married on June 29, 2005 in a surprise ceremony at the exclusive Parrot Cay resort on the Turks and Caicos Islands. Officiating at the ceremony was her Alias co-star Victor Garber, who had taken an internet course in how to conduct a wedding especially for the occasion. Only after the marriage did their publicists finally confirm what everyone already knew from the photographic evidence, with an announcement that Jennifer was indeed pregnant with the couple's first child. Jennifer's pregnancy was incorporated into the plot of Alias, with the final season's episode order reduced from the initial 22 to 17 to allow Jennifer go on maternity leave. On December 1, 2005, she gave birth to a daughter, Violet Anne Affleck, in Los Angeles, California.
Name change?
Although Jennifer continued to be billed as "Jennifer Garner" for professional purposes after her marriage to Affleck, she had in fact taken her husband's name and preferred to be known as "Jennifer Affleck" for non-professional purposes. In late 2007, she officially revealed this name change when she received a "Special Thanks" credit under her married name on Ben Affleck's directorial debut movie, Gone Baby Gone. This name change was confirmed as being official when she registered to vote in the 2008 Presidential election as Jennifer Affleck, not Jennifer Garner.
Jennifer's growing family
In July 2008, after much media speculation on the subject, representatives for the Afflecks confirmed that Jennifer was five months pregnant with the couple's second child.
