Personal Life

Childhood and Early Career

Katie Holmes was born in Toledo, Ohio, the youngest child in a family of five. Her parents are Kathleen, a homemaker and Martin, a lawyer specializing in divorces. Holmes was born and raised Roman Catholic and attended parochial school for her entire life, earning a 4.0 grade point average. She appeared in school musicals at the nearby all-boys school. Upon graduation she was accepted into Columbia University, where she attended for a summer session.

At age fourteen Holmes began taking acting classes at a modeling school in Toledo. She attended a New York City talent expo in 1996 and found an agent. Her agent sent an audition tape to the casting director of The Ice Storm, scoring Katie the part of Libbets in Ang Lee’s 1997 suburban drama set in the 1970s. In January 1997, Holmes moved to Los Angeles for pilot season. According to her hometown paper, she was offered the lead in Buffy the Vampire Slayer but turned down the role. She was asked to come audition for producer and writer Kevin Williamson but she was playing Lola in her high school production of Damn Yankees, so she was allowed to audition by videotape. This audition landed Holmes the role of Joey Potter on Dawson’s Creek.'

Relationships

Holmes dated her Dawson's Creek costar Joshua Jackson for the first two seasons of the show. In 2000, she met actor Chris Klein, whom she was later engaged to. The couple broke up in early 2005. Just a few weeks after this breakup, Holmes began dating Tom Cruise, who is sixteen years older than her. The couple was infamously referred to by the media as TomKat. On April 18, 2005, the couple met during a business meeting in Cruise’s office when he asked Holmes to read for a part. The meeting went on for four hours and Cruise and Holmes were instantly hooked. They made their first public appearance together on April 29th at an awards show in Italy. Exactly one month after the appearance, Tom Cruise was jumping up and down on Oprah Winfrey’s couch, declaring his love for Holmes, and dragging her out on stage during his interview. During her whirlwind romance with Cruise, Holmes became pregnant and converted to Scientology from Roman Catholicism. Although she had always interviewed without a public relations person or agent present, she began appearing at interviews with "best friend" Jessica Rodriguez, a member of a prominent Scientologist family. She gave birth to daughter Suri Cruise on April 18, 2006. Holmes and Cruise married in a star-studded Scientologist ceremony in Italy exactly seven months after their daughter's birth.

Movie Career

Holmes has not been extraordinarily positive about her own film career, saying some of her films were “just horrible” and complaining that "It's not like I have a lot of stuff that's great just waiting for me to sign on to."

Holmes’ first leading role was in Disturbing Behavior. She won an MTV Movie Award for Best Breakthrough Performance for the role. Next she starred as a good girl wrapped up in a bad situation in Go. She followed this with Teaching Mrs. Tingle, which was written and directed by Kevin Williamson, who wrote Dawson’s Creek. After Tingle Holmes costarred with Michael Douglas and Tobey Maguire in the critically acclaimed Wonder Boys.

In The Gift, Holmes stopped playing good girls and instead played a lusty vixen who had affairs with men all over town. Holmes bared her breasts in a sex scene in this film, saying "I just hope there aren't a lot of pauses on DVD players.”

Holmes followed this critically panned performance with another, in 2002's Abandon. She had greater critical success in the independent favorite Pieces of April in 2003. The following year she released the flop First Daughter and the extremely successful Batman Begins with Christian Bale. She made Mad Money and Thank You For Smoking in 2005. Another topless scene in the latter was allegedly nixed by Cruise before the film's wide release.
