The John Paulus Incident

On February 6, 2006, The National Enquirer runs an article titled "Clay is Gay!" and all hell breaks loose. John Paulus, a 37 year old former Green Beret, claimed to have met American Idol superstar Clay Aiken online under the IM username "valleyprettyboy". On January 2, Paulus claims he and then went to the Quality Inn hotel in Garner, North Carolina. He paid cash for a room and waited. Within 5 minutes of Clay showing up, Paulus claims they began to have unprotected sex. The National Enquirer claimed they gave Paulus a polygraph test that he passed and that he had evidence from the night he spent with Clay that had his DNA on it. Shockingly enough, Clay wasn't keen on offering up a DNA sample to a man who claimed he saved a towel with ejaculate on it.

Paulus appeared on The Howard Stern Show on February 15, 2006 to talk about his claims. During the 45 minute show, Paulus elaborated on his claims. He continued saying he was doing this only because Aiken was a hypocrite by staying in the closet with his sexuality and that he received no money for the article. He told Howard Stern he was losing money by coming forward as not many people like to choose their real estate agent from tabloid articles about gay sex.

The Claymates and Aiken's legal team attacked. Paulus claimed he and his family received death threats on a daily basis. Paulus began releasing more stories about Aiken's family and personal life that couldn't be substantiated. The threats, according to Paulus, still continued in 2008.

Recanting His Story

In October 2007, a Clay Aiken fan went looking for more information on the John Paulus situation and if he was still claiming to have had sex with Clay Aiken. The fan, known as "Clayfully Yours", took screenshots of various comments Paulus made in response to questions left on his site. In these comments, Paulus recants almost every single accusations he made about meeting Clay Aiken and answers why he made the stories up to begin with. Paulus says that Clay pissed in the Cheerios of the wrong people in Los Angeles so a plan was hatched to ruin his image by a group of 8 men. For some reason, The National Enquirer never ran a recant regarding the situation themselves. Paulus' blog now has just a biography of his military service and old photo as its only entry.

Webcam Proposition

In August 2006, The National Enquirer printed an interview with a man who said that Clay tried to get some action while hanging out in a gay chat room with his webcam running. The man, a teacher who refused to be identified, said that he met Clay while chatting in a Manhunt.net chatroom in December 2005. The source claimed that this all took place the day before Clay's big concert in Boston. The source says he refused because the hotel Aiken was at wasn't nice enough to make the trip to see Aiken worthwhile. Obviously a man who would sell chat logs and webcam photos that allegedly contain personal information has standards.
